The State Public Affairs Committee (SPAC) represents the advocacy efforts once associated with the Junior League of South Brevard, now recognized as the Junior League of the Space Coast. It works in coordination with the Junior Leagues of Florida State Public Affairs Committee, a network that includes 24 Junior Leagues and over 11,000 women from across the state.
SPAC focuses on civic engagement through policy research, legislative awareness, and collaboration. It engages with local communities and lawmakers to explore and discuss public concerns. Each year, members attend meetings and participate in advocacy efforts in Tallahassee. These activities support issues relevant to both Brevard County and the state of Florida.
Over time, the committee has contributed to discussions on a wide range of topics. These include food insecurity, child safety, education, domestic violence, and public health. For example, one past initiative supported school-based food donations by reducing liability for participating institutions. Another focused on helping unaccompanied youth access medical care without requiring a guardian’s consent.
Additional efforts have addressed identity theft prevention, human trafficking, and improvements to child passenger safety laws. Many of these measures aim to strengthen protections for children and other vulnerable populations. SPAC has also supported broader community-focused legislation, such as reforms related to environmental planning and emergency response systems.
In recognition of the committee’s long-standing contributions, the Florida House of Representatives declared January 17, 2024, as “Junior Leagues of Florida Day at the Capitol.” This designation highlights the historical role that the Junior Leagues of Florida have played in public affairs and legislative advocacy throughout the state.
