Community-Based Health and Wellness Efforts for Children
Overview of Local Health Initiatives
In South Brevard County, efforts to support child wellness have historically included school-based programs focused on nutrition education, physical activity, and basic needs support. These initiatives, originally developed under the “Fueling Kids” name, have since expanded in scope and purpose.
Evolving Program Focus
The former “Fueling Kids” initiative has transitioned into a broader community wellness program known as Fueling Families. While still centered on addressing childhood health, the program now supports both students and their families. Key areas of focus include food security, wellness education, and physical activity opportunities in schools.
Current efforts include the following:
- Stocking food pantries at Title I schools
- Providing recreational equipment and hosting field day events
- Organizing workshops on nutrition and budgeting
- Establishing community gardens to increase access to fresh produce
Participating sites have included schools such as Sabal Elementary, McAuliffe Elementary, ALC South, and ALC North. These programs reflect an ongoing response to community needs and have adapted over time to address broader concerns around health access and equity.
Physical Activity Integration
The Morning Mile remains an active before-school program in several Brevard County elementary schools. Designed to promote daily movement, this program allows students to walk or run before the school day begins. Participants earn recognition based on the cumulative distance they complete.
Schools such as Surfside Elementary continue to offer the Morning Mile on a regular basis. This activity encourages physical fitness and helps students form healthy habits that contribute to improved academic performance, focus, and overall well-being.
Additional Support Services
In addition to nutrition and exercise programs, community initiatives also provide clothing, hygiene products, and sports equipment for students in need. These services are typically directed toward Title I school populations and help meet essential health and welfare needs beyond the classroom.
Together, these programs demonstrate a sustained, community-rooted approach to supporting child wellness in South Brevard.
