Fueling Kids’ focus is to provide events to Sabal Elementary twice a month with an expanded monthly program agenda to provide learning about the importance of nutrition and physical activity for proper health, provide a fun and engaging physical activity as well as planned interactive food activity where the students can create their own healthy snack and eat it during the event. JLSB feels that focusing on one school will have a stronger, longer lasting impact on the 85-100 students we will be reaching in the aftercare program.
Fueling Kids currently sponsors the Morning Mile program for Sabal Elementary, which kicked off on Tuesday, September 2, 2014 for its second year, and JLSB will also sponsor two more schools for this year, with a goal of kicking off their programs the first week of October. The Morning Mile is available to all students of the three schools that JLSB sponsors with a possible reach of over 600 students. It is recommended that a child engage in 60 minutes of physical activity per day, the Morning Mile provides a fun and rewarding opportunity for students to participate and be introduced to a daily habit of physical activity. Physical activity not only prevents obesity and obesity-related issues, but also enables children to perform better academically; it improves concentration, classroom behavior, and cognitive, social and motor skill development. JLSB will be hosting Morning Mile awards ceremonies through-out the school year to present the students that have reached certain milestones with awards for their achievement.
As part of the Fueling Kids project, we sponsor 20 students for the Children's Hunger Project. JLSB has partnered with the Children’s Hunger Project to provide young people on the Space Coast with weekend food backpacks and a goal of ensuring elementary school-age children do not have to experience hunger and malnutrition. The cost to feed one child for the entire school year is $150.
Fueling Kids will also be providing necessities, such as clothing, shoes and hygiene products, for the health and welfare of the children in need that attend Title 1 schools in the South Brevard community as well as needed sports equipment that the schools cannot afford to buy.
